Pondering...

Over the past week or so, I have been pondering how I would like to direct myself in this course, and how I can make it beneficial for me. While I like the idea of creating an online resume/website with my work, I feel that it is more important as of right now to create something with substance that I can then later on put on a personal online resume. So my question then is, what do I do now?

My interests lie in journalism, specifically concentating on politics/history. This is generally where I want to go with my career, but how would I apply this to a multimedia writing class? I have been pondering a few ideas, but nothing has jumped out at me yet. The journalism and political world are both major periods of flux and they seem to be inter-related. Because journalism is presented more and more in an online format and political news is reported via journalists, one directly affects the other. So where do I go from here? Anyone have any ideas?

  1. I would get out there on the Internet and look at ideas. Check out things like the St. Petersburg Times has done with their Obameter, tracking Obama's promises through his presidency. Check out other journalism/politics projects. What do you like? What do you see a need for? What can you do? Can it be something here at Ferris?

  2. I can relate to your dilemma, Dan.

I think I'm taking the easy way out and doing a sports website, but I may have a couple ideas that could help. Because you've got an interest in politics, maybe you could look at things at a local level, then offer analysis. The Pioneer or Torch would be a great place to get some idea, then you can delve deeper into some of the issues.

I don't find reading the news that enthralling, but it often gives me new avenues of research that I hadn't thought about. For example, when the whole debate over Obama's health-care plan began, there were a lot of claims that it was a Nazi-esque system. After I researched it a bit, I found out that the Nazi did adopt it, but the plan was originally conceived by FDR years prior.

Maybe you could debunk some assumptions about Big Rapids' political scene? Good-luck with whatever you decide.

  3. Hey Dan. I kind of like Mitch's idea about covering something local. Maybe make a website covering some of the major happenings that happen in Big Rapids/Ferris.

I believe that this would be something concrete that you could add to your professional portfolio.
